George Fox was born March 10, 1781, in Frederick County, Maryland.(1) He was the son of Frederick Fox and Catherine Booker.(2) George may have been born at or near Fox's Gap in Maryland. The gap received its name from George's grandfather, John Fox, who was the earliest settler in the immediate vicinity of the gap.(3) Fox's Gap is where the Old Sharpsburg Road from Frederick, Maryland, to Sharpsburg, Maryland, crosses the South Mountain.(4) The Old Sharpsburg Road was part of the Great Wagon Road to Philadelphia, which also was known as the German Monocacy Road.(5)
Fox's Gap was the scene for a major portion of the Battle of South Mountain between forces under Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union General George B. McClellan on September 14, 1862.(6) The Reno Monument, dedicated to U. S. Major Jesse Lee Reno who was killed in the Battle of South Mountain, stands at Fox's Gap.(7) A little more than one hundred years prior to the Battle of South Mountain, on May 2, 1755, the road through Fox's Gap was used by General Braddock, George Washington, and Maryland's Governor Sharpe to travel from Frederick Town to Swearingen's Ferry on the Potomac River, while on their way to Fort Cumberland during the Braddock Expedition.(8)
George Fox was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Middletown, Maryland.(9) In 1805, at age 24, George acquired the Fox Inn along the Old Sharpsburg Road, about 2 miles east of Fox's Gap.(10) The Fox Genealogy by Daniel Gebhart Fox indicates that the Fox Inn, which still is standing and is occupied by renters in the year 2004, was built on land owned by Frederick Fox, George's father.(11) However, Curtis L. Older found no land records that support Frederick Fox as the owner of the land upon which the Fox Inn stands.(12)
George married Elizabeth Ann Link on August 9, 1807, at Shepherdstown, Virginia, now West Virginia.(13) Elizabeth was the daughter of John Adam Link II and Jane Ogle.(14) Elizabeth's father was a grandson of John Jacob Link, who was an ancestor of Dwight D. Eisenhower.(15) Jane Ogle, a daughter of Alexander Ogle of Frederick, Maryland, was a descendant of John Ogle of Delaware.(16)
Elizabeth Ann Link was born on January 28, 1784, near Frederick in Frederick County, Maryland.(17) She was baptized in the Frederick Lutheran Church.(18) George and Elizabeth Fox moved west to near Miamisburg, Ohio, in late 1807 along with a number of other families with ties to George's parents, Frederick and Catherine Fox.(19)
George and Elizabeth Fox were the parents of ten children: Adam, Frederick L., Daniel L., Catharine (Mrs. John Fox), George L., Alexander, Susanna Jane, Elizabeth, John L., and Mary L. Fox.(20) George Fox died June 14, 1847, in Miamisburg, Ohio, and was buried in the Gebhart or St. John Cemetery in Miamisburg.(21) Elizabeth Ann (Link) Fox died March 9, 1872, in Miamisburg, Ohio, and is buried next to her husband in the Gebhart or St. John Cemetery.(22)
George Fox is listed in the 1809 Ohio state census for Franklin Township in Warren County.(23) The 1810 Ohio Federal census for Warren county, Franklin township, lists the George Fox household.(24)
The 1830 Ohio Federal census for Warren county, Clear Creek township, lists the George Fox household as consisting of 7 males and 2 females: one male was 5 and under 10, two males were 10 and under 15, two males were 15 and under 20, one male was twenty and under thirty, one male was 40 and under 50; one female was 5 and under 10 and one female was 15 and under 20.(25)
The 1840 Ohio Federal census for Warren county, Clear Creek township, lists the George Fox household as consisting of 5 males and 4 females: one male was age 15 and under 20, two males were 20 and under 30, one male was 30 and under 40, and one male was 50 and under 60; two females were age 5 and under 10, 1 was age 15 and under 20, and one was age 50 and under 60.(26)
